The Ultimate Scavenger Hunt for Kids

This year instead of the traditional Easter Egg Hunt, I decided to make an outrageous scavenger hunt for my grandkids. I had a mini scavenger hunt at my last Grandma Camp and it was a hit. Now that 2 of them are readers, I knew this would be a fun new tradition for Grandma’s house.

Making the Ultimate Scavenger Hunt for Kids

The Clues For My Scavenger Hunt

I decided to come up with 15 – 20 clues that would have them running from the front of the house, to the backyard, inside, & out. I knew the weather was going to be nice, and this would be a great way to get them moving and burning up some Easter candy energy.

They needed to be fun and imaginative, but not too hard. My group of sweet peas range in age from 2-7 years old. The clues that I made worked out perfect for their ages.

Some of my clues were rhyming, which makes it easier for them to solve. Others were a little more difficult. I made Rebus clues, where you use pictures to describe the clue, mores code clues, clues that you had to use a mirror to read (upsidedowntext.com is a great reverse/backward/upside down word generator), maps, & puzzle pieces.

Clue Ideas that I Used

  • Turn me on to see at night. I’ll make the front porch seem so bright. – clue taped to porch light.
  • Red, white, blue. When the wind blows, I wave to you. – clue attached to American Flag.
  • In this place where Grady (our dog) goes to sleep, He curls in a ball and you won’t hear a peep. – dog bed.
  • Hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, and more. Find your next clue where Papa makes food galore. –BBQ pit.
  • Go to the room that is made for the car. Look on the bench where Papa’s tools are. – garage, work bench.
  • 2 + lips (I drew a picture of lips).- front flower bed.
  • Wipe your shoes on me before you go into the house. – welcome mat on front porch.
  • Your next clue is in a box, on a post. I have my own red flag. – clue is in mailbox.
  • Your next clue is where the fairies play. (This clue was written so that you had to hold it up to a mirror to read.) – clue is by fairy garden.
  • Play with me on a hot day, cool yourself off when you don’t have a pool to play. – clue is by garden hose.
  • Rebus clue picture of the sun. picture of a mushroom. the minus sign. the word mush. (See image) – clue is in the sunroom.
  • I’m dirty and hungry always waiting for my stash, please open my mouth and give me some trash. – clue is taped to trash can.
  • On the porch is where I sit, please come and join me for a bit. – clue taped to front porch chair.
  • Open my door for a bright light, grab some juice to fill up your cup. – clue is taped to box of juice drinks in fridge. (great drink break from running back and forth.)
  • Go to the place where you rest your head. (This clue was written in morse code.) – clue on pillow in bedroom.
  • Although I have no feet, I can move around. Inside my trunk is here your treasure can be found. (This final clue was written on puzzle pieces that they collected throughout the game.) – Treasure basket waiting for them in the back of my car.

The Set Up for the Scavenger Hunt

I gave each of the sweet peas one puzzle piece in their Easter baskets. As they stuffed their chubby cheeks with treats, they began to realize that they each had a puzzle piece. The 2 oldest ones tried putting them together to see what it said.

Setting up the Scavenger Hunt

They quickly decided that there were more pieces missing and looked to me for an answer. I presented them with clue #1.

Clues from my Scavenger Hunt

In random clues, I included a piece of the puzzle or a piece of a map. Both when completed were a separate clue in itself. In one of the clue envelopes.

Treasure Map clues

In another clue, I added a copy of the Morse Code. It would be used for a later clue. I was excited to see the lightbulb go off when they got to that clue and realized they had the key to help them decipher the clue. Same ah-ha moment when they found the clue that was written in reverse. Their little minds are so smart already!

Their last clue contained only the final piece to the treasure map. No Clue! Their mind wheels began to turn as one of them said let’s put the map together and see if that is the clue.

The Scavenger Hunt Treasure Map

Of course ran to where the X marked the spot and found the puzzle board with no pieces. They dumbed out their bag of pieces that they had collected along the way and began to work together to finish the puzzle.

Completing the puzzle

This final clue led them to the Treasure Basket. YEAH!!!

Treasure basket full of springtime fun!

Surprises Along the Way

Besides the juices in the fridge for a quick drink break, I also included other treats along the route. (This hunt was long!) There were 6 eggs stuffed with candy by the Fairy Garden Clue. And a bag full of individual animal crackers were waiting at Papa’s Work Bench Clue.

And then the Treasure Basket at the end was full of springtime fun. It was amazing! The sweet peas loved their hunt. I can’t wait to work on my next hunt for Summer Grandma Camp! ~Susie Peas

For more hunting fun, I take the sweet peas geocaching. These are fun for adults too!!

Launch Party

Chalkboard sign announcing Launch Party
Launch Party

You all know how I LOVE to throw a party. A get together for any reason always turns into a celebration of family and friends for me. It’s like getting out your fine China for a dinner party, except with colorful paper plates!

When Susie Peas launched 3 days ago, it was the perfect reason to blow up some balloons and P A R T Y!

Susie Peas

This little hobby of mine, Susie Peas, has become a much needed distraction from life as an empty nester.

I mean, I can only dust and wash the windows so many times. The endless loads of laundry have disappeared. Wear it today and it’s back in your drawer washed, dried, and folded by tomorrow. Hand washing the dinner dishes is the new norm. It only takes 5 minutes to wash 2 plates, 2 forks, and 2 cups. Otherwise, you have to wait a couple of days before the dishwasher is full enough to run.

Now What?

I had to find something to do with all of this free time. I decided in January that I wanted to start my own blog. Strange I thought for me because I’m not really a bookworm.

I do like to read blogs about things that I pin. Pinterest is my FAVORITE way to waste the day away. I wonder how many miles my thumb has scrolled?

Also strange because I am not a writer. I can talk circles around anyone though. So I realized instead of talking about ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING, I could put it down on paper (work with me here) and ta-da, I’m a writer. And so Susie Peas was born.

I worked hard on setting up my blog. I searched and scrolled all over Pinterest and the internet about the how-to’s and what not to do’s. I began writing about all of the fun things that I love to do.

Keto

I wanted to tell everyone about my Keto journey and how I lost almost 60 pounds. I am a real life person that dropped lots of weight in a short amount of time. No magic pill. I want to share my new way of eating and all the great recipes and menus that I use to help me get to my healthiest me.

Child Development

My child development knowledge from raising my own kiddos, granny nannying, and my formal education in early childhood is something else that I wanted to get out there. My last 9 to 5 was as a Parent Educator in our local school district. I have so many fun ways to help you teach your little ones and how to reach all of their milestones.

And More…

Great DIY’s – I have so many to share. Add in some glitter, frugalness, and party decorations. Stir. And there you have it – Susie Peas!

Now that I have this lovely blog all I needed to do was push the LAUNCH BUTTON. As nervous as I was, I knew that if I had a few of my favorite people with me, It wouldn’t be so hard. – Plus, a reason to party.

Invitations

Invitation to my Launch Party
Launch Party Invitation

I put my usual Favorite Party Planning Tips to work. I sent out invitations to announce my Launch Party date and time. Always remember to keep people with other obligations (like children) in mind when planning your date and time. I had my party scheduled for after bedtime so that my daughters could come without their kiddos. Less distraction so they could enjoy the adult party setting. All mommies need some adult time – it’s healthy and normal!

Decorations & Supplies

Next, I went to my local Dollar Tree, the cheapest place to get all your partying supplies, and got decorations and paper products in green. That was the perfect color for my Susie PEAS Launch Party. I got plates, napkins, balloons, tissue paper pompon decorations, folders to hold our “homework” for the evening, plus nuts & candy for everyone to munch on for less than $20.00. Amazing. I also had an 8×8 picture of Susie Pea blown up at Walgreens photo for 2.50. I do it online, one-hour photo and always use their coupon that you find right on the website.

Last Minute Details

I threw in a couple of pizzas 30 minutes before my guests arrived, quickly decorated my huge DIY Chalkboard and that’s it! Check out all of the fun we had celebrating me pushing the LAUNCH BUTTON – including a champagne toast! ~Susie Pea

Last Swing Before the Ring

Last Swing Before the Ring was a fun idea for a themed bachelorette party for my daughter Becki. This was a great way to celebrate that bride-to-be that loves baseball. The last swing was a perfect plan for her last hurrah with her friends and family.

Shop for official St. Louis Cardinals fan gear from Majestic, Nike and New Era at Shop.MLB.com

The afternoon started as a tailgate party at my house and ended at the ballpark. It turned out to be a beautiful day with lots of fun memories. Here is a peek at how the whole party went down.

Surprise!

It was a surprise party – always the best kind to have! The guests paid for their ball tickets in advance. This helped lock down the rsvp’s for the evening. Plus it allowed us to get the group rate for our tickets.

Tailgating

We all parked our cars next to eachother and lifted the hatches to stage the tailgating part of the afternoon. There were red and white streamers, themed posters, cracker jacks, baseballs, and peanuts everywhere.

We set up a drink station which included a cooler full of Budweiser. The perfect drink for a Cardinal game! Ballpark hotdogs and chips were on the menu. And how about these cute cookies from Brookie Cakes?!

We asked the ladies to wear their red St. Louis Cardinal’s gear. The bachelorette was going to be in white. We got Becki a “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” t-shirt. The back of the t-shirt said Mrs. Joiner and the number 13 (year she got married). She also wore a St. Louis Cardinal’s veil that you can order here.

What fun is was to show up at a BBQ Tailgate event hosting all of her besties. We opened presents, ate, enjoyed refreshments, and laughed about the silly signs hanging everywhere. Each guest got a themed gift bag with peanuts, bottled water, Cardinal beads, bubblegum, and STL temporary tattoos to sport at the game. The guests all signed a baseball for Becki to keep to remember the amazing day.

Go Cards!

Next, we headed to Busch Stadium for an evening of baseball for her last swing. It was a great time hanging out at the Ballpark watching the hometown team win a game. I am sure she will remember her bachelorette for a long time.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s Bridal Shower

My oldest daughter, Brooke absolutely loves Breakfast at Tiffany’s! So when it was time for her bridal shower, we knew that she would love a Breakfast at Tiffany’s Bridal Shower.

Hand me my purse, darling. A girl can’t read this sort of thing without her lipstick. – Holly Golightly

Setting the Stage

The venue was decorated with pearls, boas, and tiffany blue packages everywhere. Black & white wedding photos of all the happily married guests adorned each table. Specially made wedding cake cookies baked with Brooke’s great-grandmother’s sugar cookie recipe were arranged at each place setting. There was a photo booth, Tiffany Blue Martinis, diamond shaped crystals, and of course candy cigarettes. No detail was too small. The party was as lovely as Brooke is!

Dress the Part

Because this party was a surprise for our Bride-to-Be, we asked each guest to wear black along with their favorite pearls. We had a tiara, pearls, and black gloves for our guest of honor to put on to help set the stage for our Breakfast at Tiffany’s event.

Elegant Food

We served a four course menu, basically running around like crazy people because we did it ourselves. It turned out amazing and everyone enjoyed the fine food at our Breakfast at Tiffany’s party. No one realized how wild it was back in the venue kitchen! (My suggestion would be buffet style or catering staff instead).

Photo Booth Fun

The photo booth was a hit! Everyone enjoyed dressing up with all of the fun props. We had the pictures developed in black & white and Brooke sent copies of the prints with her Thank You cards.

Games

We played Bingo (this is a gambling family so BINGO was our safest game to play), and Brooke opened her gifts.

It was a wonderful time celebrating such a beautiful bride. What was your favorite Bridal Shower event that you attended/hosted? ~ Susie Pea

Surprise 50th – Cheers to 50 Years!

For the hubby’s 50th surprise party, I arranged a daytime party away from home. It was a 3 phase shindig, so I enlisted several people to help me pull it off.

Soulard Market

First, I planned a morning of shopping at Jason’s favorite farmer’s market. We have spent many a Saturday morning at Soulard Market in downtown St. Louis. Prices and selection are amazing and they have great Bloody Mary’s! This is something that Jason loves to do so it was the perfect starting point in the set up for his birthday surprise.

St. Louis Bar Cycle

Halfway thru our shopping stroll, we took a seat at one of the outdoor patios. When down the street came this bicycle bar with blaring music and about 14 familiar faces peddling it. SURPRISE! …and so the party begins!!

Jason was so excited! We jumped on the Bar Cycle and pedaled all over the Soulard neighborhood bar hopping. Along the way, we stopped at several bars for shots and fun. We made it all the way to Anheuser Busch Brewery, but by then we were exhausted from pedaling. Lucky for us, our bar cycle had a motor. (Our guide didn’t tell us this until then.) Of course we decided to relax and kick back the rest of the trip.

More Surprise Party Fun at McGuirk’s

We jumped on the barcycle and bar hopped around town until reaching our final destination where a crowd of partygoers gathered outside of McGuirk’s and cheered us on as we made our way there. We finished out the afternoon with even more of Jason’s family and friends in a party room filled with balloons and appetizers and a special beer mug cake made by Brookie Cakes. It was great not having to clean up after everyone!

This was a unique and fun party that I’m sure all that attended will be talking about for years to come. The St. Louis Bar Cycle Company was so easy to work with. Our guide was a blast! I definitely recommend trying this sometime.

Great Party Ideas for Him

One of my favorite things to do is host a great party. I especially like making sure that the get together is completely about the one I am celebrating. From food and drinks, decorations, and the cake, I want it to be all about the guest of honor. I want to embrace every aspect of the party and make it all about him.

Just because your guy isn’t a kid anymore doesn’t mean he wouldn’t love a party all about him. Here are some great ideas to get you headed in the right direction for an amazing party.

While men don’t usually get into all of the excitement of putting the perfect party together, they still enjoy being the center of attention when the day arrives. And when they see the little touches that you included that showcase his personality, he will be impressed to say the least.

Murder Mystery Party

If a smaller gathering is what you are going for, here is a fun party idea. Invite a few adventurous friends that would like to “play” the part of an exciting murder mystery. There are games that you can buy that already come with invitations and scripts for each guest, or you can find some ideas for your own murder mystery online. Here is a great one from @nateandrachael.com.

Get everyone pumped up for the big night by starting with great invitations. Be sure to assign them a part for the night in the invitation. Request that they come dressed in character. Theme your decorations, foods, and cake around the mystery that you will be playing. With the perfect crew, this one is sure to be a great time!

Bar Cycle Party

St. Louis Bar Cycle

Have you ever seen a Bar Cycle? It is a party on wheels just waiting for you to peddle all over town. The bar cycle comes with a guest driver to help you plan your route stops, and keep you on schedule for your final destination. St. Louis Barcycle is a great company that travels all over the Soulard neighborhood. I did this party for my hubby’s 50th. We had an amazing time! Check it out here.

Super Hero Party

Super Hero Party

A fun Father’s Day party that I hosted for all of the Grandpas and Dads in our family was a Super Hero Party. @sippycupmom.com has a some cool ideas that you can use at your party. This party was so much fun and it made the day extra special for the kids too. It was an easy way to get together with all of the men in our life at once. With all of the wives and moms attending, there were more than enough hands to help with running the party.

Taco Bar

source @caferio.com

Men love food! So you could let the party be all about the food. How about a Taco Bar with Margaritas and Coronas? Perfect for that festive and easy event. Add same green and orange balloons and it’s a party! Or grill burgers, whip up some baked beans, add potato salad. Serve in aluminum pie tins with a bandana napkin – boom – western theme.

Whatever you choose to do, just remember that he is the reason for the get together so the food should be some of his favorites. It wouldn’t be fun for him if he didn’t like what you made.

Cigar Bar

source @cigarblog.tumbler.com

Another fun ideas would be to host a cigar bar. Serve whiskey and set up some charcutery boards and mini sandwiches for guests. You can have the matches printed with a special birthday wish for your guy.

Get Together For Favorite Sport

Football Themed Party from @catchmyparty.com

Put together a party around his favorite sport or sports team (or whatever hobby that he is into). Now just whip up some concession stand food and beer, hang some balloons and streamers in team colors, and there you have it.

If you are still not sure what to do for an amazing unforgettable party, ask yourself, “what does he like to watch on t.v.? Does he play video games? Is he a bowler? Or does he lift weights?” You can have a party about anything that is all him. And I know that he will love it!

I hope that these party themes have given you some good ideas on throwing a great event for your guy. As long as you put things all about him into your party planning he will be over the top happy with anything that you do. How to Host A Successful Grandma Camp

My Sweet Peas

NO PARENTS ALLOWED!

One of my favorite things to do with my sweet peas is to host a crazy, jam packed day full of food, crafts, games and most important – NO PARENTS ALLOWED! How to Host a Successful Grandma Camp is a great guide designed to help you be successful while you entertain your grandchildren for the day.

Don’t get me wrong. I love spending time with my daughters. I love even more that when we are all together, I dont have to be the one to change diapers or make the littles’ dinner plates. Mommies and daddies have to do all of that dirty work.

But there is something about the bonding that takes place when it’s just me and my grandchildren. My full attention is on them and theirs’ on me. For this reason, I decided to get together one day a year for an entire day planned just around us. (I actually have a summer camp and a Christmas camp now because of how much we all enjoy it!) No errands, no chores, no parents, and no broccoli! Well, if you like broccoli then by all means have it.

Sure, I spend many days with the sweet peas, but those days are usually for only an hour or two, or mom is tagging along bossing us around, or we have to stop by the store for eggs and milk. But this day is all about having one on one fun with no distractions. Actually, one on six but who is counting. 🙂

Now that I have several camps under my belt, I have come up with a system that helps Grandma Camp run smoothly. I thought it would be fun to share my tips on How to Host a Successful Grandma Camp and give you some ideas for your own fun day.

Themes to Help You Host Grandma Camp

  • Theme – Think of Grandma Camp as a big party that you are about to host. By picking a theme for your ‘party’, it will make it easier to tie in crafts, games, and a menu.

Here are some great ideas for your camp. The sky is the limit here. Think about your littles’ ages and what they are into right now. Then plan everything around it.

  • Under The Sea
  • Christmas Camp
  • Bugs & Butterflies
  • Secret Spy Camp
  • Pirates & Pearls
  • Circus
  • Stars & Stripes

The Invitations Set the Stage

  • Invitations – You can hand make your invitations or buy them at the party store, but do not skip this important step. Kids love getting something in the mail with their name on it and it helps to set the scene for what to expect at camp. Plan on the invitation arriving a few days before your camp. This ensures that the campers won’t hound their parents for weeks about when they get to go to grandma’s house. (But do schedule the date with their parents in advance so there are no double booked problems). Ideas for Invitations here.

A ‘Home’ for Their Stuff – Helping You Stay Organized When You Host Grandma Camp

  • A Place to Put It All – One of the the first things that we do when I host grandma camp is decorate bags or buckets to hold all of the treasures we make throughout the day. This one tip helps us have some control over the chaos of glitter and glue. You will be thankful that you took the time to do this.

Feeding the Little Campers

Nature Camp.
  • Menu – If your camp is all day like mine, you will need to plan breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. I wouldn’t worry about making all meals camp themed. It is more important to include foods that they like and will eat. A hungry camper is NOT a fun camper. I like to make at least one of the meals/snacks geared to the theme though. Here are some fun ideas for camp breakfasts, camp lunches, camp dinners, and kid friendly snacks. Let the kids help you cook. They are more likely to eat it if they helped make it.

Craft Ideas for Camp

  • Crafts – Crafts geared towards the theme are another easy activity to schedule into your day. This is a great way to work on fine motor skills with your sweet peas. When you host grandma camp, it is a perfect time for helping your littles learn to use glue, paint, color, and practice scissor skills. These are all things that strengthen their little hands and fingers. You can read about Toys that Encourage Fine Motor Development in Toddlers here. Plus it is good practice for being school ready.
  • Service Projects – I incorporate special projects into our day as well. it is fun learning about our community and caring for people and things. Because my grandchildren are still small, we usually do some type of bird feeders. As they get older, I would like to introduce more profound projects like adopt a soldier. Look for my post on Teach Them Young here. It is about the importance of teaching children about honoring our servicemen and women.

Fun and Games

  • Games – When coming up with games, especially for your camps hosted in the summer, there is one rule – the messier the better! For winter camps when you have to be inside, you may want to be a little cleaner. Either way, working their big muscles helps with gross motor development as well as burns off some stored up energy. You can check out Toys That Encourage Gross Motor Development in Toddlers here. You will want to include board games and cards into your day too. These are great for the older ones while the younger ones are napping. Here are some favorite card games that work on math skills and are easy to learn.

When You Host Grandma Camp, Plan Some Down Time

  • Chill Zone – This is the time that the younger campers go down for a nap and the older ones ‘chill’ with a movie or quiet games. Coloring and playdough are great chill zone activities as well. This is the homemade playdough recipe that I use.

Snap Some Pictures of Your Day

  • Pictures – Don’t forget to take pictures of your day. I snap tons while we play, but always set up a photo shoot type picture opportunity. This is one of the best ways for me to get a group picture of all of my grandchildren at once. You can take individual family pictures as well. Have pictures printed at a one hour printing place like Walgreens for pennies. I send Papa out to pick them up. You can put the prints into the frames that the kids made during craft time. We use them for
Father’s Day gifts or Christmas gifts for mom and dad. Here is an awesome picture frame project to check out.

Business as Usual at Grandma’s House

  • Free Time – Be sure to allow for unscheduled free time. Hanging out at grandma’s house is fun even without a million activities scheduled. So allow them to do what they normally love to do when they visit. Believe me, its an exhausting day to host grandma camp. You will need free time to recharge as well! Here are some of my favorite relaxing activities that I like to do after the sweet peas head back to their pods.

Wrapping It Up!

  • Wrapping It Up – 30 minutes before pick up, have kiddos change into jammies, brush their teeth, and quiet down with a great kid friendly movie.

Whew! Your grandkids will be so excited for the next Grandma Camp. But for now, relax. You did it! If you liked this post, you might like Mud Kitchen Ideas to see how I set up a muddy mess for my sweet peas. Or check out my Ultimate Scavenger Hunt for Kids. – Susie Pea

I love parties! I love going to them, but I especially love hosting them. Parties are a chance to get together with family and friends to celebrate the ones you love as well as catch up on each others lives. Choose the Date

Party Planning Tip number #1. -Pick the date. 2 months prior, check your calendar for the perfect party date. Avoid holidays if you are scheduling a birthday party, shower, or anniversary type party. But if your party is for a holiday, then by all means make it as close to that holiday as possible. Saturdays usually work out the best for everyone. If they are already taken, a Friday evening or early Sunday party have both worked out well for me. If your event is for younger children, remember to account for nap and bedtimes as a courtesy.

Invite Your Guests

Party Planning Tip number #2. -5 weeks prior send your invites or evites. This will help to ensure all your guests don’t already have plans when the party date arrives. Little Susie won’t understand that all of her friends were busy. And the guilt when you realize her party flopped because you waited to invite friends one week before the party. Add an RSVP with a deadline to your invitation. This will help you when buying food, setting up seating areas, and the party favors. You don’t want to clean, decorate, and bake expecting a houseful and no one comes. It is acceptable after the deadline to contact the guests that did not RSVP and give them a gently reminder. This will ensure that you get a good count of partygoers.

Decorations & Supplies

Party Planning Tip number #3. -Get party supplies at the Dollar Tree. Unless you find an unbelievable bargain, this place is THE place to get your party supplies! No matter what theme of party you are throwing, you can bring it to life using color. Colored plates, napkins, streamers, balloons. All only $1.00 at the Dollar Tree. ( bonus tip – buy a bag of colored balloons and have them fill with helium to pick up day of party.)

If you find a bargain on these things somewhere else, go for it. I am just saying that you don’t have to have Paw Patrol or Princess logoed expensive paper plates. Red or Blue plates for Paw Patrol, or Pink or Purple plates for a Princess theme will work just fine. Or if it a graduation party, school colors work great even if they don’t have the graduate’s year on them. Don’t forget tape, wrapping paper, cards, thumb tacks – all $1.00.

The Cake

Party Planning Tip number #4. -Bake your cake the week before your party and pop it into the freezer. Pull it out the day before, thaw, and ice. If you are ordering a cake (this beer mug cake made by Brookie Cakes), arrange for pick up the day before party as well. Trust me, you don’t want to enlist grandma or hubby to run around town at the last minute picking up a cake. Here is a my favorite go-to ice cream cake recipe that is quick and easy.

Get Yourself Ready

Party Planning Tip number #5. -Wake up early on party day and get YOURSELF ready. Even if your house is clean, your food is made, the decorations are hung, time will inevitably get away from you. The next thing you know, the doorbell is ringing and you forgot to put on your make-up and fix your hair. True story, more than twice!! Just do it.
